Abstract
Cet article revient sur les significations du suicide qui se sont succédé dans l’histoire à partir de l’hypothèse que l’émergence du suicide des jeunes en Occident inaugurerait en même temps une nouvelle signification du suicide. Celle-ci se situerait en rupture avec la gravité que la sociologie lui avait reconnue en l’appréhendant comme problème social. Dans le but d’étayer cette hypothèse, l’article revient sur les sémantiques historiques propres à la tradition occidentale depuis la plus haute antiquité. La notion de sémantique historique vise à intégrer sous un même concept les significations pratiques vécues comme suicide, le sens qu’y attribuent les sociétés historiques et les discours savants qui les saisissent.
