Abstract
Partir de um país onde a esmagadora imposição religiosa colocou em perigo a sua antiga fé foi uma das etapas na busca de autopreservação a que os judeus etíopes (Beta Israel) tiveram que se submeter. Em Israel, onde se estabeleceram nas últimas décadas do século XX, coube aos etíopes a penosa tarefa de enfrentar a mudança hierárquica pela qual a própria família precisou passar, ao lado das demais diferenças socioeconômico-culturais. E, a todas essas, sobrepôs-se a distinção da cor da pele. Como tais enfrentamentos e adaptações à nova experiência se apresentam na linguagem ousada do conto “Eich shehaolam nihiya lavan” (Quando o mundo se tornou branco), (2013), da coletânea sob o mesmo título de Dália Betolin-Sherman, uma das raras escritoras israelenses de origem etíope, é alvo da abordagem neste texto. É através do olhar da personagem Ester-menina e, depois, adolescente, quando o crescimento é acompanhado pela sensação de estranheza, que se pode seguir a complexidade da experiência no novo país.
