Abstract
L'histoire de l'éducation des personnes sourdes est un sujet qui a suscité un intérêt certain un peu partout dans le monde depuis les années 1980. Quelques auteurs, tels Carbin ou Perreault, se sont appliqués à décrire le contexte canadien et québécois, mais encore peu d’écrits ont été consacrés à certaines provinces, notamment le Nouveau-Brunswick. C’est cette lacune que le présent livre tente de combler. Au cours de la dernière décennie, Bastien David et Charles Gaucher se sont intéressés au développement des services pour les personnes sourdes canadiennes dans les provinces de l’Atlantique, depuis le rattachement de cette province au Canada (XIXe siècle) jusqu’à la fin du XXe siècle. Les différents matériaux recueillis – documents d’archives, photos historiques, témoignages d’acteurs ayant contribué aux récentes mutations – permettent de retracer cette évolution et de dresser un portrait inédit d’une histoire singulière. Des premières institutions pour enfants sourds aux philosophies inclusives contemporaines, l’ouvrage tente d’identifier les principaux marqueurs historiques de l’éducation des enfants sourds au Nouveau-Brunswick.
