Avant-propos E n couverture, la marche sur la Côte-du-Sud du 43 e Régiment britannique d'infanterie, en provenance de Fredericton au Nouveau-Brunswick et à destination du Bas-Canada, fournit un aperçu de la circulation des troupes, des vents et des idées à l'époque.Le vent d'hiver gonfle la tunique d'un officier, incurve la fumée des cheminées, pousse avec le courant les glaces sur le Saint-Laurent et les nuages au-dessus des montagnes.Richard G. A. Levinge, le militaire de ce régiment qui a saisi cette marche, donne l'impression que les troupes descendent et vont fondre sur le Bas-Canada.La quiétude chaude des maisons de pierres en bord du fleuve n'est pas encore rompue par l'intrusion des troupes 1 .L'image introduit le lecteur aux mouvements de l'époque, à une histoire qui se passe au Bas-Canada, dans les « Lower Colonies » dont le Nouveau-Brunswick et au Haut-Canada d'où la quasi-totalité des troupes ont déjà été transférées dans la région de Montréal.L'histoire se passe dans les colonies d'Amérique du Nord britannique.
