Politologue de renom, né en Angleterre, en 1954 Philippe Garigue devient professeur à l’Université McGill. En 1957, il rejoint les rangs de l’Université de Montréal où il est nommé doyen de la Faculté des sciences sociales. En 1980, il occupera, jusqu’en 1987, la fonction de principal du Collège universitaire Glendon, rattaché à l’Université York, à Toronto. En 1997, il prend sa retraite à l’âge de 80 ans. Philippe Garigue est un grand penseur du Canada français. L’ouvrage rend enfin accessible à un large public, ses principaux travaux sur le Canada français parus dans la foulée de la Commission royale d’enquête sur le bilinguisme et le biculturalisme au Canada et les débats sur le statut constitutionnel du Québec. Ses écrits portent sur l’identité canadienne-française, le fédéralisme, le nationalisme ainsi que la francophonie ontarienne et internationale. D’une très grande actualité, ces travaux témoignent des transformations de l’identité canadienne-française depuis les années 1950.
