Abstract
Jacinthe Michaud's 2021 publication fills an important gap by offering a fulsome comparison of Québécois and Italian feminism/s of the late 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.The study focuses on major areas of discourse that evolved at the frontiers of the two feminist movements, showing how they sometimes diverge, while at other times they overlap, mirror, or dovetail one another.The volume offers an incisive analysis of the multifaceted and interrelated struggles that were at the forefront of Italian and Québécois feminisms between the 1960s and the 1980s, as well as a cogent overview of political and cultural contexts for the synergy among diverse movements at this time.Michaud's emphasis in this book is on activism, feminism's ties with local political and social struggles, and the theories that emerged as a result of this work.Michaud's sources include not only feminist journals, periodicals, and archives in both Québécois and Italian cities, but also a substantial number of interviews with members of Québécois and Italian feminist groups, as well as documents from those groups.This approach allows for a decidedly refreshing insight into the two movements.After providing an overview of the feminist mobilization that characterized the late 1960s and the early 1970s, Michaud follows the breaking up of the feminist movement/s in both Italy and Québec into disparate groups and collectives and their ensuing soul-searching processes.She traces the dissemination of feminist thought across all strata of Italian and Québécois societies over the decades leading up to and into the 1980s.The book also addresses the challenges of memory transfer of feminism/s from one generation to the next.Michaud cites the rejection of the capitalist matrix on the part of Western feminisms of the 1960s and 1970s and the shift to a two-pronged plan of feminist action: the action by radicals who strove to achieve their objectives through a thorough transformation of social relations, positioning gender at the core of all struggles, and the action of socialists who upheld race and social class as equally essential to the feminist cause.Michaud delves at some length into the many reasons why the decades at issue in her book witnessed not only the sudden emergence of mass political movements, where feminist activism was central, but also a sudden
