O tempora, o mores: Over fotobijschriften, werkwoordstijden en conventies

Abstract
In het Engels, maar niet in het Nederlands, komen vaak fotobijschriften voor in de tegenwoordige tijd die ook een expliciete bepaling van tijd bevatten die naar een tijdstip in het verleden verwijzen (bijv. yesterday). Deze ogenschijnlijke tegenstrijdigheid is te analyseren als een geval van ‘dubbele deixis’, waarbij de werkwoordstijd verwijst naar het referentiepunt R (Reference Time), dat overeenkomt met het interval waarop de foto ‘voorhanden’ is, terwijl de bepaling van tijd refereert aan het moment van werking W (Event Time) van de gebeurtenis in de werkelijkheid buiten de foto. Dit verschijnsel wordt gerelateerd aan andere gevallen van dubbele deixis m.b.t. een representatie, zoals Engelse futurates die in de tegenwoordige tijd kunnen staan omdat ze verwijzen naar een rooster (schedule). Verschillen tussen het Nederlands en het Engels zijn het best te begrijpen als taalgebonden stilistische conventies.
