Abstract
Né de la volonté d’un ancien industriel, Jean-René Gravereaux, le musée de la Chemiserie et de l’Élégance masculine sauvegarde et transmet un patrimoine représentatif d’une activité industrielle créée au xixe siècle : la confection de chemises pour hommes. Ouvert en 1993, il se situe dans le premier atelier mécanique de lingerie créé par Charles Brillaud vers 1860. C’est au second étage du musée, sous les toits en shed, qu’un atelier de chemiserie a été reconstitué : on y découvre les grandes étapes de fabrication, le bruit des machines à coudre et autres outils, l’inconfort des conditions de travail. Les témoignages d’anciennes ouvrières, les documents d’archives et les photographies donnent vie au matériel, aujourd’hui inerte. S’intéresser aux chemisières, c’est aussi raconter l’histoire d’un vêtement, celle de la chemise, son évolution, son rôle social, sa symbolique. C’est également replacer ce vêtement dans un contexte plus large, celui de l’évolution de la mode masculine.
