Avec l’essor des effets visuels numériques, se déploient depuis une dizaine d’années de nombreuses retouches dorénavant totalement imperceptibles, dont le beauty work. Pour une part, ces améliorations esthétiques du visage des acteur·rice·s prolongent les techniques précédentes, à commencer par la retouche photographique de portraits du 19e siècle. Mais le beauty work pose aussi de nouvelles questions, tant sa présence dans des productions hollywoodiennes à gros budget et même dans des oeuvres françaises à budgets plus réduits se renforce, au fur et à mesure que les discours entourant la pratique se réduisent. Entre beauty narratifs valorisés pour l’exploit technico-esthétique qu’ils représentent et beauty officieux, perçus comme une forme facilitée de chirurgie esthétique illégitime, le beauty work devient un trompe-l’oeil tellement parfait qu’il n’existe plus en tant que tel, transformant la moindre imperfection en perfection absolue.
