A new microwave photonic signal processor for use in a frequency diverse array (FDA) to generate a dot-shaped beampattern is presented. The microwave photonic signal processor is implemented based on a dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) modulator and a phase modulator (PM), with the amplitude and phase of an input radio frequency (RF) signal controlled by the bias voltages to the DP-QPSK modulator, and the frequency offset to the RF signal is realized by Serrodyne modulation at the PM. The operation of the signal processor is analyzed theoretically and demonstrated experimentally. The results show that the proposed signal processor can generate an RF signal with arbitrary controlled amplitude and phase and a frequency offset ranging from <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$-$</tex-math> </inline-formula> 240.2 to 8.4 kHz. A dot-shaped beampattern generated by a 32-element nonuniform FDA is calculated using the experimentally generated RF signals. The beampattern exhibits a low peak sidelobe level (PSLL) of 0.3443 and narrow angle and range half power beamwidth of 7.69 <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$^{\circ}$</tex-math> </inline-formula> and 2.35 km, respectively.
