Entre 1945 et 1970, les poètes québécois se sont beaucoup intéressés à la fonction de l’écriture poétique. À partir des essais qu’ils ont consacrés à cette question, François Dumont propose, dans cette étude de référence, l’analyse d’une période charnière de l’histoire de la poésie québécoise. La poésie étant liée, dans les discours, non seulement aux changements proprement littéraires, mais aussi aux changements sociaux, Usages de la poésie présente une perspective originale sur la période qui va de la Seconde Guerre mondiale jusqu’aux mouvements de contestation de la fin des années 1960. Tout en faisant valoir la particularité de chacun des discours, l’auteur s’attache à mettre au jour trois « lieux communs » qui apparaissent en succession : le lieu de l’unité (valorisation de la cohésion, de l’ordre, de l’harmonie), le lieu de la discordance (valorisation de la dialectique, de la confrontation, de la disparité) et le lieu du progrès (valorisation de la rupture totale au nom du changement global).
