Abstract
Le 17 juin 1961, la télévision de Radio- Canada présentait le premier épisode de la série Artisans de notre histoire (The History Makers sur la Canadian Broadcating Corporation), qui racontait et surtout expliquait l’histoire politique du Canada entre les années 1830 et l’avènement de la Confédération en 1867. La série débute par l’épisode intitulé Le demi-dieu, consacré à Louis-Joseph Papineau. Deux courants en particulier ont puissamment contribué à façonner ce film. D’abord, le révisionnisme historique en cours depuis le début des années 1950 et associé à l’historien de Québec, Fernand Ouellet, a directement influencé le scénario de Guy Dufresne. Puis, la réalisation du film s’est faite dans le contexte d’un courant de contestation et d’affirmation des créateurs francophones de l’Office national du film, qui les portait à défier les normes imposées par les cadres anglophones de l’organisation et à considérer leur participation à la réalisation de courts films dramatiques comme l’occasion d’innover et d’acquérir de nouvelles compétences.
