Abstract
Au coeur du quartier historique de Montréal se trouve le plus ancien égout collecteur au Canada. Cette monumentale oeuvre de génie civil en pierre taillée a été conçue en 1832 par deux architectes britanniques dans le but de canaliser et enfouir la Petite rivière, devenue alors un égout à ciel ouvert. Cet égout a eu une longévité exceptionnelle, désaffecté en 1990 lorsque remplacé par un nouveau réseau d’intercepteurs des eaux usées. Depuis mai 2017, à l’occasion du 375e anniversaire de la ville, Pointe-à-Callière, Cité d’archéologie et d’histoire de Montréal, a restauré et rendu accessible aux visiteurs un segment de 110 m de long, qui sert maintenant de lien souterrain entre les pavillons du complexe muséal. Le présent article met en lumière les objectifs qui ont guidé la réalisation de ce projet de réhabilitation ainsi que les enjeux et défis qu’ont rencontrés les concepteurs et experts.
