Abstract
Si se toma como punto de partida la capacidad que demuestra la cultura para influir en las decisiones de los responsables de la política exterior, la Bienal de Venecia supone un excelente caso de estudio a la hora de reflexionar sobre las relaciones políticas e intelectuales que Italia y España mantuvieron durante los años cincuenta a través del lenguaje común del arte abstracto. Además, siendo el concepto mismo de diplomacia cultural más bien ambiguo, este artículo puede ayudar a entender mejor la conexión conceptual entre las relaciones culturales y la diplomacia internacional durante la Guerra Fría. Paradójicamente España, según la perspectiva del gobierno democristiano italiano, representaba una pieza más de una nueva Europa culturalmente conectada y fundada sobre los valores de las democracias liberales atlánticas.
