Efforts to analyze the growing impacts of climate change in the Canadian Arctic have increasingly relied on new technologies such as remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS) to survey and chart these impacts for climate modelling. However, RPAS vehicles face widespread performance challenges in Arctic environments, which has limited their effectiveness. This thesis analyzes some of these challenges through development of a methodology to monitor RPAS performance in different environments. These range from extreme winter conditions to more temperate spring and summer conditions. Once constructed, this methodology was tested by conducting sample missions in each environment and comparing the results. Generally, degraded battery performance was seen with colder temperatures, images taken were brighter and clearer with increased snow cover, and increases occurred in the RPAS’ climb rate with increased wind speed. These findings are useful to Arctic operators in highlighting Arctic-related performance trends, which helps them to plan missions more effectively.
