À l’horizon des discussions récentes sur la laïcité et la religion dans la sphère publique se joue le lien historique et profond que la France et le Québec nouent, par-delà leurs différences, avec un catholicisme romain majoritaire. C’est dans l’analyse de ce lien, autour de la problématique « catholicisme et culture », et l’affinement nécessaire des théories de la sécularisation que réside l’apport du rassemblement des contributions qu’offre ce livre. Qu’en est-il de la prégnance, du rejet ou de l’oubli du catholicisme qui, au fil du temps, avait pénétré toutes les couches de la vie collective ? Qu’en est-il de la liaison ou de la déliaison entre catholicisme et société sous les multiples angles culturels que sont notamment les rites, les pratiques religieuses, la conception de la nation, la famille et l’éducation des enfants, le patrimoine, la mémoire et la littérature ? Les études présentées ici captiveront et éclaireront tout lecteur, qu’il soit universitaire, professionnel, étudiant ou issu du grand public.
