O marketing urbano vem se constituindo em uma técnica urbanística de inserção das cidades nos espaços de consumo global, para tanto se valem de um conjunto com projetos urbanos emblemáticos quase sempre dentro de um modelo de gestão de parcerias público-privadas. A organização de grandes eventos internacionais são as motivações que levam as cidades a competirem entre si valendo-se de um discurso de impulsionar seus desenvolvimentos. O artigo discute as relações entre o marketing e o planejamento urbano e os reflexos diferenciados entre os legados advindos desse modelo entre cidades do norte global e aquelas de urbanização desigual como as brasileiras. Para demostrar o que se aponta no plano teórico se discute a título de exemplo a operação urbanística do “Porto Maravilha” no Rio de Janeiro vis a vis ao emblemático caso de Barcelona. Como resultado se conclui que nem tudo que é bom para Barcelona é bom para o Rio de Janeiro.
