Air Asam Tambang (AAT) adalah salah satu permasalahan lingkungan terjadi dari perusahaan pertambangan khususnya pertambangan batubara, sehingga harus dilakukan pengolahan atau treatment secara tepat. Treatment AAT pada tahun 2021 menggunakan karbon aktif batubara 60 mesh yang memiliki komposisi 60% batubara dan 40% ZnCl2 yang diaplikasikan untuk penyerapan logam Fe dan Mn pada AAT Artifisial, penyerapan yang diperoleh sebesar 9,97% untuk logam Mn. Pada Penelitian dengan metode eksperimen ini dilakukan modifikasi permukaan karbon aktif menggunakan surfaktan Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) untuk meningkatkan jumlah serapan terhadap logam Mn. Penelitian ini menggunakan variabel berupa konsentrasi awal larutan AAT artifisial dan konsentrasi surfaktan untuk karbon aktif termodifikasi. Karakterisasi karbon aktif dilakukan dengan analisa bilangan iodin. Berdasarkan penelitian sebelumnya, penelitian ini mengalami kenaikan penyerapan pada logam Mn. Tingkat penyerapan logam Mn paling optimal ada pada karbon aktif 1,5CMC yaitu sebesar 19,43% dengan konsentrasi awal larutan Air Asam Tambang sebesar 4,565 mg/L. Variasi konsentrasi surfaktan 1,5CMC ini mampu menaikkan pH menjadi 4,27 dengan pH awal 2,94. Dari hasil yang telah diperoleh perlu dilakukan penelitian lebih lanjut untuk meningkatkan serapan terhadap logam Mn dengan bahan dasar dari batubara.
