Abstract
Este artículo parte de un análisis de los contenidos referentes al ejército y el tratamiento de la soldadesca, mediante los cuales la Relación enuncia un discurso sobre la decadencia imperial, marcado por el desengaño del ideal militar, un pesimismo de corte antibelicista y el tono didáctico-moralizante. Seguidamente se analiza la luz favorable con que el capitán retrata las relaciones entre cristianos, musulmanes y judíos en el relato de su viaje, subrayando puntos de permeabilidad cultural, intercambio y cooperación, con lo que problematiza las nociones esencialistas y el tratamiento que la España del Siglo de Oro reservaba para las diferencias religiosas.
