À partir d’un travail de recherche qualitative sur une population de dyades mère-bébé hospitalisées en unité parents-bébé, nous étudions les résonances entre deux approches de la souffrance du bébé. La première correspond à une recherche clinique au contact direct de la famille, la seconde à une analyse à distance sur base de vidéos du bébé et d’une cotation standardisée (ADBB) du retrait relationnel. Les résultats mettent en évidence que, lorsque l’observateur menant la recherche connaît l’histoire de la famille, un regard neutre sur le bébé n’est pas toujours possible, de par l’identification à la souffrance parentale. Lorsqu’une ou plusieurs personnes tierces observent le bébé « à l’aveugle », sans connaître le contexte familial, se dégage alors un accès à la souffrance du bébé plus objectif. Les auteurs proposent de multiplier ce type d’interventions, au sein des équipes ou entre les équipes afin de garantir un soin spécifique au bébé. Enfin, il apparaît que le corps du bébé se fait le traducteur au moins partiel et pour certaines dyades, d’une part des interactions fantasmatiques. C’est pourquoi les auteures proposent de parler plutôt d’interactions tonico-fantasmatiques.
