Abstract
Saint Augustin n’est pas un auteur indifférent aux malheurs de son temps, comme le sac de Rome, qui apparaissent comme scandaleux et font douter bon nombre de ses fidèles. Ne témoignent-ils pas d’un abandon de Dieu, voire de son impuissance ? Augustin reprend, dans ses sermons, la notion de scandale afin de montrer qu’elle n’est pas adaptée pour définir ces événements malheureux. Il développe une réflexion sur l’histoire qui lui permet de donner un sens à ces apparents scandales, en les incluant dans l’histoire du salut sous la forme de l’épreuve. Cela suppose, pour le chrétien qui les subit, une herméneutique particulière.
