En France, le développement des technologies et la recomposition des territoires ont suscité des réflexions critiques et de nouveaux questionnements sur le sens même du métier de bibliothécaire qui se voit attribuer plusieurs rôles importants à la fois. Qu’en pensent les bibliothécaires de lecture publique ? Estiment-ils vraiment être des acteurs clés du développement socioculturel de leur territoire ? Cet article apporte des premiers éléments de réponses à ces questions en articulant réflexions théoriques et analyse de données. D’abord, il décrit la revue de la littérature qui met en exergue la spécificité des bibliothèques de lecture publique, tout en soulignant la complexité du métier de bibliothécaire. Ensuite, l’article analyse et discute les résultats d’une enquête qualitative exploratoire menée auprès des bibliothécaires de lecture publique dans trois territoires métropolitains en France, qui confirment un véritable attachement aux missions et dévoilent les sentiments qui les animent quant à leur participation au développement territorial. Dans la conclusion, qui met en lien la réflexion théorique et l’analyse des données avec la problématique, l’article fournit des pistes de réflexion pouvant aider les bibliothécaires à mieux se positionner dans le territoire.
