La plantation d’arbres est utilisée par de nombreuses municipalités comme solution naturelle pour faire face aux enjeux du changement climatique. Ce choix permet d’abaisser la température en luttant contre les îlots de chaleur urbains, de fournir un support à la biodiversité, d’améliorer le cadre de vie ainsi que la santé physique et mentale des citadins. L’arbre en ville, qu’il soit seul, en alignement ou dans un parc urbain, dépend de ses interactions avec les organismes qui lui sont associés dans les feuilles, le bois, le sol mais aussi de ses liens avec les arbres voisins et avec l’écosystème urbain. Fortement liés aux activités humaines, l’arbre en ville et la forêt urbaine font l’objet d’une gestion précise dont les enjeux et les modalités ont évolué au cours du temps. L’environnement urbain présente en effet des contraintes mais offre également des opportunités pour le développement des arbres. En retour, l’arbre et la forêt contribuent à façonner l’environnement urbain, avec un bénéfice recherché pour les populations humaines, faisant d’eux des objets autant écologiques que politiques. Cet ouvrage s’adresse à un public averti, et particulièrement aux personnes étudiantes et enseignantes en sciences du vivant et de l’environnement, en géographie, en sociologie et en sciences politiques. Il intéressera également les urbanistes, les gestionnaires des espaces verts et les élues et élus des municipalités.
