Louise Dupré a fait paraître une vingtaine de livres et plus de cent textes de création, mais n’a publié qu’un seul recueil de nouvelles : L’été funambule, chez XYZ éditeur, en 2008. Dans les 26 textes qui le composent, elle livre, non sans humour, des tranches de vie de femmes dans le mitan de la vie. À l’heure des bilans, l’une converse avec une amie, une autre rencontre un homme, apprivoise un désir, voyage ou fait le deuil d’un être cher. Les déplacements sont significatifs pour celles qui font face au vent de leur histoire. Dans « Babel heureuse » et « Le chat », il importe de tirer des leçons du passé. Dans « Le monde vidé », la mer qui a rejeté un cadavre est celle-là même qui redonne des forces pour renouer avec la vie. Des malades, dans « Le bar » et « Le dernier octobre », nous rappellent avec une belle simplicité qu’il est bon de vivre. Les jeux avec le temps révèlent quelque chose du processus de composition et font ressortir l’importance de ce recueil dans l’oeuvre de Dupré.
