Abstract
Le songe a souvent été associé au rêve ou à la rêverie sans qu’on puisse en déterminer la nature exacte. L’usage du mot lui-même semble appartenir au registre vieilli et connoter une époque révolue en littérature. Pourtant, Anne Hébert n’hésite pas à en faire le point nodal de son oeuvre. Le titre de son premier recueil, Les songes en équilibre, sert de vecteur à ce projet d’écriture qui trouve son aboutissement dans Le tombeau des rois, ainsi que dans les oeuvres subséquentes. Cet article fait d’abord brièvement le point sur la théorie du songe pour en préciser les enjeux et souligner sa pertinence. On y définit ensuite le songe dans son fonctionnement psychique en regard de son application littéraire chez Anne Hébert. En quoi l’enfance peut-elle par ailleurs en constituer l’origine ou le déclencheur ? Comment le recueil trouve-t-il son unité et son homogénéité à l’intérieur du cadre-songe ? Quel est le but de la quête obstinée qu’entreprend la songeuse ? Qui est l’auteur du songe ? Pourquoi enfin ce combat perpétuel ou polémos au coeur du songe ?
