Abstract
Abstract In this chapter, the experience of offering music programming in three retirement homes in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, is used to problematize the meaning and value of recreational singing for older adults. Specifically, this chapter focuses on the paradigmatic shift in approach that occurred over the six-month period of the program. Originally conceived as an intervention to address feelings of loneliness and social isolation, responsive relationship building and a spirit of reciprocity eventually took precedence over the expectation to engage participants in song. By eschewing the expectation of “expertise” and embracing humility, symbiotic relationships between facilitators and participants resulted in a collective circle of connection and friendship.
