Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

The Thetford Mines asbestos strikes of 1915 and 1916 and the formation of a Western Federation of Miners (WFM) local prompted the formation of a Catholic union in opposition to the secular North American “international unions” and led to intense inter-union rivalry. The chapter examines the neglected role of Ukrainian migrants, who often were militant socialists and free thinkers. Despite comprising only a small minority among the miners, they were able to forge solidarity across ethnic, linguistic, national, political, and religious lines. Acknowledging the central role of East European workers facilitates an enhanced understanding of the strategy used by the Catholic Church and its union to encourage employers to fire and replace active free Ukrainian union supporters with French Canadian Catholics. In addition, the Canadian Federal government undermined the WFM by blocking a legal strike and by furnishing German and Austrian civilian internees, mostly recent Ukrainian immigrants, as unfree labour to one large mining company.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
