Mavis Gallant est souvent étudiée comme une autrice expatriée dont l’écriture est centrée sur l’Ailleurs. Et pour cause, il n’y a qu’à jeter un bref regard aux titres de ses recueils de nouvelles – The Other Paris, In Transit, Paris Stories, Going Ashore – pour voir l’importance que le voyage prend dans son imaginaire. Cependant, l’écriture de Gallant porte également en elle un discours persistant et complexe sur le « chez-soi », lequel se présente parfois comme le Canada, parfois comme le Québec. Dans cet article, nous examinerons la relation entre le « chez-soi » et l’Ailleurs à la fois dans la fiction de Gallant, mais aussi dans les introductions, les préfaces et les entrevues dans lesquelles elle réfléchit à sa propre écriture. Dans ces dernières réflexions, Gallant a fréquemment recouru aux figures du voyage, lesquelles doivent être prises en considération dans toutes les analyses de son écriture. En travaillant à partir du recueil Home Truths, cet article aborde les nouvelles dans lesquelles les personnages, qui partent vers l’Europe, finissent par revenir au Canada. En même temps, il abordera aussi celles où on les voit revenir à Montréal après des années passées à New York. Si les histoires de Gallant sont rarement autobiographiques, elles offrent néanmoins des références indirectes à ses voyages personnels à travers une exploration continuelle de la délocalisation. Dans ce contexte, le « chez-soi » devient forcément une catégorie instable. Considérant que cette instabilité a déjà été étudiée en ce qui a trait à l’exil, notre article se concentrera plutôt sur les questions entourant la fiction et les figures du voyage présentes dans les oeuvres de Gallant.
