Abstract
This chapter assesses Scottish and Nova Scotian Gaelic speakers’ acquisition and use of Gaelic, as well as their cultural identifications with the language. Gaelic is currently undergoing revitalisation on both sides of the Atlantic, as policymakers seek to develop a durable future direction for language maintenance efforts in the two settings. Internationally, the strategic attempt to stem decline of minoritised languages has focussed increasingly on creating new speakers to increase overall numbers of endangered language users. This development reflects recognition by policymakers that once interrupted, the transmission of languages between generations within the home is extremely hard to re-instate. This chapter draws on a subset of interviews from Scotland and Nova Scotia to examine new speaker heritage and identity orientation among divergent cohorts of Gaelic speaking adults on both sides of the Atlantic.
