Abstract
This chapter addresses the volume’s theme of land by exploring the intellectual, political and practical impact of Britain’s aristocracy and gentry on emigration, settlement and land reform movements in the Scottish Highlands and Atlantic Canada. It does this through a series of case studies that covers the period from c.1800 to the early twentieth century. It addresses questions of class, diaspora, and the transnational movement of people, ideas and systems.
