Abstract
End-stage ankle arthritis (ESAA) has a severe effect on patients’ health-related quality of life. 1 When nonoperative treatments fail, ankle arthrodesis surgery or total ankle arthroplasty can improve pain, function, and health-related quality of life. 2 , 3 Arthrodesis remains the mainstay of operative treatment for patients with isolated ESAA and no ipsilateral periarticular arthritis (Canadian Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Score [COFAS] type 1), intra-articular deformity, and isolated (COFAS type 2) and extra-articular deformity (COFAS type 3). 4
