Abstract
S’il est crucial, pour un soignant, de posséder de bonnes compétences communicationnelles, leur application n’implique pas forcément une qualité de présence à l’autre dans l’interaction. Les jeunes étudiants en médecine qui appliquent pour la première fois les stratégies communicationnelles nous interpellent d’ailleurs parfois : « j’étais tellement concentré sur les étapes du modèle Calgary-Cambridge1, mon comportement non verbal, l’élaboration de mes reformulations, que je n’ai pas vraiment entendu ce que le patient essayait de me dire, je n’étais pas vraiment présent dans l’interaction… ». La maîtrise progressive de ces stratégies communicationnelles et des compétences disciplinaires au cours de la formation, heureusement, libère l’espace mental requis à l’exercice d’une véritable présence en situation de soins. Aussi, dans les situations cliniques les plus intenses émotionnellement (conversations de fin de vie, situation d’incertitude, annonce de mauvaises nouvelles, etc.), la qualité de présence du soignant peut agir comme un véritable pilier en soutenant le patient et ses proches dans ce qu’ils vivent.
