Ce livre jette des regards croisés sur le métissage, ceux d'historiens, de littéraires, d'ethnologues, d'archéologues, de philosophes et de muséologues. Les auteurs dévoilent et débusquent les expressions du métissage dans la parole, les textes littéraires, les objets matériels, les expositions, les pratiques alimentaires et la danse, tant dans les contextes coloniaux que postcoloniaux. Loin de considérer le métissage comme un entre-lieu heureux, une situation rassurante du milieu, ils adoptent une posture critique envers cette notion aujourd'hui à la mode et récupérée par tous les discours, ceux de gauche et de droite, ceux du nationalisme et du transnationalisme, du Tiers monde et du Premier monde. Certains y ont recours pour lutter contre les fondamentalismes de toutes sortes ou les forces hégémoniques du capitalisme mondial, alors que d'autres s'en méfient, soutenant qu'il représente une utopie trompeuse construite et manipulée par un pouvoir occulte. Les auteurs de ce recueil présentent des perspectives variées sur le métissage qui recoupent celles que l'on retrouve aujourd'hui de par le monde.
