Abstract
Crohn’s disease (CD) is classified into inflammatory (B1, nonpenetrating, nonstricturing), stricturing (B2, stenotic), and penetrating (B3, fistulas and/or abscesses) disease. 1 Although this is the standard Montreal classification, the stricturing and penetrating categories have significant overlap; most fistulas/penetrating complications arise upstream from a stenosis. 2 , 3 Epidemiologic data on the prevalence of stricturing disease demonstrate a correlation with disease duration, in that, after a decade of disease, approximately one-third of patients with CD will have developed a stricture. 4 Numerous studies have documented a steady progression of patients over time to increasingly complicated disease phenotypes (Figure 2-1).
