Abstract
Alors qu’on s’inquiète de la crise du logement, de l’individualisme grandissant et de l’isolement qui s’ensuit, des milliers de nouveaux ménages de colocataires se forment partout chaque année au Québec, complexifiant plus encore le tissu social urbain. Dans un contexte social et culturel où il n’est pas toujours possible de vivre en couple, mais où on n’a pas nécessairement ni l’envie ni les moyens de vivre seul, la colocation s’avère une réponse astucieuse, permettant à la fois de se loger à moindre coût et de rompre l’isolement, sans pour autant s’engager dans un projet de vie à long terme. Cette enquête de terrain, menée pour une maîtrise en ethnologie à l’Université Laval, auprès d’informateurs qui vivent en colocation, permet de mieux comprendre cette nouvelle façon d’habiter, d’organiser le quotidien et de négocier le rapport à l’autre. La constitution d’un ménage éphémère, avec un non-intime, donne lieu à un jeu permanent de rapprochement et de mise à distance dans la construction d’un chez-soi. Vivre en colocation, c’est en fin de compte être à la fois seul dans sa trajectoire de vie et avec d’autres au quotidien.
