Abstract
This chapter discusses Useeit's racing career, beginning with her first starts in Al Hoots's colors at Moncrief Park in Florida and continuing through her racing in the American West in 1911-1913 under the care of Guy Gray. It describes the hardships faced by horses and horsemen as they traveled by rail and raced. The chapter reaches a turning point when Al Hoots, facing health problems, goes to Canada for health reasons and takes Useeit to race there. It also introduces Hoots's friend Hanley Webb, who became Useeit's trainer shortly before the trip to Canada began.
