Las novelas Un episodio en la vida del pintor viajero (2000) de César Aira y Rugendas (2015) de Patricia Cerda se centran en los viajes suramericanos del pintor alemán Johann Moritz Rugendas en la primera mitad del siglo XIX. Inspirados por Alexander von Humboldt, sus dibujos se caracterizan por una tensión entre una aspiración científica de registrar la influencia de la morfología del paisaje sobre el carácter de los habitantes y una tendencia romántico-exotizante de la realidad latinoamericana. Basándose en el pensamiento de Walter Mignolo, el artículo analiza la colonialidad de la obra pictórica de Rugendas y su narrativización en las dos novelas, prestando una atención especial a la tensión entre una mirada colonizadora y eurocéntrica, que subordina la realidad latinoamericana, y una mirada humanizadora y emancipadora, que fortalece la conciencia de la identidad latinoamericana.
