Abstract
Few works manage to keep together the two facets of Ousmane Sembène's artistic production: literature and cinema. On the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of Sembène's birth, Présence Francophone wishes to pay tribute to the “Elder of Elders”. We are already familiar with the many battles waged by the Senegalese novelist and filmmaker throughout his career, and the spirit of this volume is not to offer a thematic survey. Rather, the aim is to analyze the interaction between the pragmatic investment and discursive implementation of this commitment. This volume therefore examines the way in which Ousmane Sembène's literary and cinematographic work operates within an institutional and cultural environment that he contributes to transforming.
