Algerian Families, Imperial Loyalties and the Memory of WWI in Le Temps de la douleur by Bahia Kiared1
Bibliographic record
Abstract
This chapter offers an analysis of Le Temps de la douleur ( 2003 ) by Algerian-Canadian writer Bahia Kiared. It applies the concept of histoire croisée to discuss Kiared&s;s conception of WWI memory that questions the clear distinction between Western categories of fiction and non-fiction and highlights the intercrossings of macro- and microhistorical structures. Furthermore, Kiared&s;s mnemonic technique, delinking from Eurocentric epistemic categories, suggests the need to rethink the legacy of war in a decolonial framework, which enables a critical reassessment of both French republican and colonial ideologies. The chapter demonstrates how, through the figure of the male protagonist, Saïd, the novel engages with the disillusionment of the Young Algerians, an Algerian political elite. The grief and anger of the female protagonist, Fatima, in turn, can be approached as an example of critical mourning, paying tribute to the indigenous Algerians killed during the war, as well as their families, but also deflating the myths of noble sacrifice. Le Temps de la douleur ( 2003 ) thus fills in the lacunae of WWI history, focusing on the intimate and the domestic, and highlighting the links between the colony and metropole.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. The Gemma side is a direct model label for every work in the frame, read from the title-only record. The Codex side is a classifier learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and calibrated to design-weighted sample rates; fields without enough sample support carry no Codex call. Candidate is the union of the two sides; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; a candidate call from one source (direct Gemma or distilled Codex), not a consensus.
