Abstract
Le présent ouvrage se veut une contribution à l’histoire rurale de la vallée du Saint-Laurent des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, soit la phase initiale de la formation du monde rural québécois. Il s’agit d’une analyse s’appuyant sur les découpages fonciers et la spatialisation du peuplement, qui dégage les environnements de base et met en rapport les éléments qui ont le plus contribué à façonner le paysage seigneurial laurentien. La présentation des caractéristiques de l’espace seigneurial précède l’examen des processus d’occupation et d’exploitation du territoire rural auxquels ont participé seigneurs et censitaires. Ces perspectives complémentaires, mises en relief par une cartographie originale, aboutissent à préciser comment une société investit un espace, à éclairer son emprise au sol et à tracer un portrait dynamique d’un univers spatial, social et mental qui reste à mieux connaître.
