Dans les années 80, celles du néolibéralisme triomphant, un nouveau regard sur l'entreprise s'installait. Faisant fi des analyses prenant en compte l'exploitation, la répression et l'aliénation, ce regard ne voulait voir que «le lien social dans l'entreprise» et «l'entreprise en tant que lien social». Que reste-t-il aujourd'hui de cet espoir moderniste qui rêvait d'accompagner l'émergence d'une nouvelle société, plus ' civile ', qui aurait comme points de repère l'entreprise, la créativité, l'identité ? Aujourd'hui, par le biais des licenciements, de la précarisation, de l'individualisation, de la flexibilisation, des dérégulations, ceux-là même qui avaient joué la carte de la ' modernisation ' et du ' management participatif ' affaiblissent le lien social dans les entreprises qu'ils dirigent. Les débats récents en témoignent. Nous assistons à l'émergence d'un nouveau discours dur l'entreprise, plus prudent, plus conceptuel et plus désenchanté que celui des années 80. Dans ce livre, nous présentons six analyses aux références volontairement diverses : de la sidérurgie et de l'industrie papetière au Québec aux districts ouvriers d'Émilie-Romagne (Italie), en passant par une grande entreprise de service public et un bilan de bientôt trente ans de politique de formation dans les entreprises en France. cependant, il n'est ici question ni de systématisation d'un discours commun, ni de création d'une nouvelle école ou d'une nouvelle chapelle. Au contraire, il s'agit de mener un débat ouvert, un débat polyphone et hétérogène. On le verra, les convergences n'en sont que plus fortes. Reynald Bourque, Pierre Cours-Salies, Geneviève Dahan-Seltzer, Antonella De Vincenti, Nelly Mauchamp, Daniel Mercure et Jan Spurk publient ici les contributions qu'ils ont pu discuter lors du dernier congrès de l'Association internationale de sociologie.
