Turning Points Along Embodied Pathways: Bringing Forth Children’s Voices Through Artistic Ways of Listening

Abstract
This paper describes a critical arts-based learning experience for a group of children between 5-and 7-years-old who co-authored and enacted a short story through movement, drama, music, and visual art during a 2-week summer dance camp I co-designed with other artists in a major Northeastern metropolitan city.Following children's embodied pathways, I find turning points in children's artistic journeys where embodied and relational encounters reoriented their movements in personally meaningful ways.Turning points along embodied pathways reveal children's dialogic experiences with artistic forms of representation as personally meaningful in their learning and being, bringing forth children's embodied voices by decentering adult conventions of dialogue and voice.My findings encourage learning scientists to explore artistic ways of listening to children's dialogic experiences through centering children's epistemologies in learning design.
