Abstract
Gaming allows for play, creativity, and expression.This study draws from ethnographic data collected over a six-month period when students at a culturally and linguistically diverse Canadian junior high school redesigned the analog tabletop game Forbidden Island.Tabletop games are more accessible and adaptable to complex school contexts than digital games.This study shows students engaged in critical, culturally sustaining processes through their engagement with this project.This paper explores the criticality expressed by one group and the importance of the tactile experience of tabletop game redesign to these student conversations and experiences.
