"Encyclopedia of the History of Ukraine": a way to a quarter of a century

Abstract
The article highlights the prerequisites and stages of creating a prfessional universal guide to the history of our country — "Encyclopedia of the History of Ukraine". It is noted that in the early 1990s the crisis of the publishing and editorial base, the rivalry of opposing controversial traditions of encyclopedics (Soviet and diaspora practices), the formation of new factual material highlighted the need to prepare the latest encyclopedia of Ukrainian history. In 1997, at the initiative of the Institute of History of Ukraine of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine adopted a resolution on the preparation of a fundamental "Encyclopedia of Ukrainian History", and later the project was transformed from a five-volume to an eight-volume, and hence to a ten-volume. It is concluded that in 2013 the preparation and printing of 10 volumes was completed, covering more than 12 thousand articles, almost 8 thousand illustrations and more than 500 specially designed maps. 1350 authors (including international ones) were involved in their preparation. Emphasis is placed on the extraordinary importance of the publication for the development of modern domestic historical science and national socio-humanitarian sciences.
