Abstract
In the past five years, group and solo exhibitions of textile works have proliferated on the international art scene.They form part of a wider movement which is reevaluating modernism and its relationship to material culture.They usually showcase women, and artists from non-conforming sexual minorities or from regions which have long been relegated to the periphery.Why take an interest in these histories of textile forms now?Precisely because in an age of profound cultural change and widespread search for meaning, they present a multiplicity of possible forks in the road, of historical paths not taken, which open up the way to approaching the present in all its complexity.
