Abstract
A Question Of Permanence: The Care & Preservation Of nineteenth Century Carbon Prints addresses the place of monochrome carbon transfer printing in the history of photography as well as best preservation practices for photographs created with this process. The research in this thesis references the collection of 809 carbon prints in the Canadian Center for Architectural in Montreal, Canada. This thesis covers the history of the carbon process, its inventors, applications, how to identify these prints, and guidelines for storage and display. A case study comparing carbon prints to albumen copies demonstrates the benefits of the carbon process over silver-based prints from a preservation perspective.
