Abstract
This chapter is a critique of what I feel is a failure of governance processes on Vancouver Island to facilitate a sustainability transition.While there are many grassroots organisations and initiatives focusing on local sustainability issues, I will argue that the lack of Island-level governance, and the relatively constrained vision of municipal and regional governments, keeps the reality that we live on a large island in the Pacific Ocean absent from governmental planning processes and documents.
