Abstract
This chapter on the changing meanings of “natural birth” in contemporary midwifery in Canada suggests a significant shift away from essentialized interpretations of the category “woman.” MacDonald argues that the concept of natural birth has complex meanings for Canadian midwives and women themselves. Rather than emphasizing the “natural” as birth without technological interventions, contemporary midwifery complicates the construct, including within its meanings the possibility of interventions such as pain medication or cesarean births. Midwives emphasized the importance of informed choice; natural childbirth, then, is about educating birthing people to validate their experiences of their bodies, and to foster personal responsibility. Resistance to medicalization is less central to the current Ontario midwifery paradigm, which, in turn, is nuanced in its approach to medical technology. Ultimately, MacDonald contends that these shifts in ideology and practice are linked to modernity and what is expected of the “modern woman.”
