Abstract
Peu de temps après l’annexion de l’Ungava, un ingénieur canadien-français, Jacques Normand, part pour la Côte-Nord avec l’objectif d’établir la souveraineté économique du Québec. En route, il rencontre une jeune orpheline américaine fortunée, Edith Darlington, qui souhaite l’accompagner dans son périple. De Tadoussac à Betsiamis, Jacques et Edith constatent avec surprise une renaissance politique et économique chez les Montagnais. Accompagnés du père Boulianne, une encyclopédie vivante, ils partent sous la direction d’un chef amérindien pour « le mystérieux Ungava, l’Ungava vierge, inexploré, d’où personne n’est jamais revenu ». Drogués par un elixir secret, les explorateurs se réveillent dans le luxueux palais d’ « Orsauvage, capitale de l’Empire des Montagnais, Nascapis et Esquimaux », une ville utopique construite par l’Impératrice dans le Grand Nord, dont elle s’apprête à révéler l’existence au monde entier. Femme pure et belle, l’Impératrice se laissera toutefois séduire par le Canadien français, scellant ainsi la réconciliation entre les Amérindiens et les Canadiens français, sur qui l’Impératrice et Jacques Normand pourront régner. Caractéristique de la littérature populaire, ce roman d’Alexandre Huot, d’abord publié aux Éditions Édouard Garand en 1927, constitue une étonnante œuvre utopique de réconciliation autochtone dans lequel percent des expressions (« maîtres chez nous », « souveraineté économique »), des préoccupations sociales et environnementales et des projets qui rejoignent le lecteur d’aujourd’hui.
