En 1942, soit cent ans après l’année où Mallarmé naît et Gaspard de la nuit paraît, Jean-Aubert Loranger s’éteint des suites d’un malencontreux accident qui met conséquemment un terme à son œuvre. Bien qu’elle paraisse incongrue, voire fantaisiste, cette périodisation semble pourtant marquer les limites d’un passage esthétique particulier où se serait jouée la modernité formelle de la poésie au Québec. Dans la suite des possibilités génériques jadis ouvertes par Aloysius Bertrand, qu’il a connu au moins par le biais du Nigog , mais aussi à la lumière des formulations relatives à la « crise de vers » de Mallarmé, Loranger agence une œuvre où les stratégies esthétiques découvrent une fabrique de la prose qui ne semble pleinement lisible que depuis le rapport ironique à la forme en vers qu’elle contribue à détourner. Cette fabrique agissant comme un mythe qu’il s’agit de débusquer, cet essai postule que ­l’intelligibilité procurée par l’organisation manifeste des signifiants formels et génériques, dans l’œuvre poétique et narrative de Jean-Aubert Loranger, agit comme pensée de tout autant que comme pensée sur la littérature. C’est à cette condition que, en opérant une mise en forme des textes à partir de classements reçus (et acceptés pour tels) de la littérature française, Loranger a produit une œuvre sans doute alors inédite dans notre littérature. Mais il a peut-être aussi surtout laissé une œuvre profondément romantique, c’est-à-dire une œuvre où compte précisément le rapport que l’art institue avec le présent.
